WASTEland by Claudia Bosse / theatercombinat
for WASTEland artist claudia bosse is working under the open sky, exposed to climatic and urban conditions in a space between possibility and decay on an unprotected area of 2500m2.
between march and september 2025 monthly encounters with a constantly changing wasteland gave rise to a permeable choreography, created together with dancers su huber, lucia mauri, carla rihl, marcela san pedro and lena schattenberg, which artistically interrogates the transformations and fragilities of urban landscapes on uneven ground.
a performance of rituals that have grown out of the space and measurements applied to it, as a gradually emerging new landscape on rubble, on traces of what has been and what is to come – with its cooperations, conflicts, coexistences.
WASTEland weaves an affective, porous space that spins stories through multiple attentions, scratching off layer by layer, revealing connections and measuring, folding and unfolding everyday narratives, mythologies and cosmologies. from the perspective of the wasteland, which claudia bosse temporarily declares an art space, one looks out onto the city, onto the world of which the unused area is in turn a part.
amidst proliferating and animated changes on this wasteland, amidst a climate catastrophe and dying species, the city becomes a resonating body for performative rituals, speculative choreographies and poetic resistance.
WASTEland is part of the series haunted landscape/s, which deals with our planet, how we understand it and how we live as part of it. it deals with massive transformations of environments and their global effects. following HAUNTED LANDSCAPE on an unseen wasteland in september 2024, monthly artistic interventions have been recurring on the wasteland behind the main station in vienna’s 10th district with WASTELAND dream/s – a chronicle on choreographic ground since march 2025. WASTEland combines these performative rituals going through the seasons in a large-scale choreography.
